Not long ago, Brazil's economy was celebrated internationally, and Rio de Janeiro, my hometown, was chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games. Country and city were in the world's spotlight and all seemed to be going well, but just on the surface. During those past few years, Brazil went through its worst recession in history. The elected president got impeached by the congress and unemployment hit a record high across the country. This economic and political crisis, caused in part by widespread government corruption, hit Rio de Janeiro hard, and the city went bankrupt. Violent crimes, which were already on the rise before the Olympics, got even worse, and Rio is under a Federal intervention today.
